In 2021, the United Metallurgical Company (OMK) delivered three sets of equipment (plug traps) to remove hydrate traps and soil particles from natural gas produced at fields in the Extreme North. The equipment had been manufactured at OMK’s Chelyabinsk facility (AO Trubodetal).
Each of the three plug traps is a complex structure 30 by 20 meters in size and includes 17 assemblies and 18 pipes weighing a total of 560 tons. The manufacturing process used over 130 different components (tees, bends, caps, adapters, gates, flanges, flange caps, plugs, ball valves, level gages, etc.). All the equipment is designed to operate at pressures of 11.7 MPa and low temperatures down to -52ºC.
To fill the order, OMK’s Chelyabinsk facility utilized plates and pipes manufactured at yet another Company facility in Vyksa (Nizhniy Novgorod Region). This collaboration between OMK's facilities helped assure final product quality.
“Our engineering functions offer customers ever more advanced solutions for plug traps. Where for a similar item, we only manufactured pipe assemblies in 2016, this delivery included all the interconnecting piping, instrument installation as well as equipment supports. All this was done at customer request, including seismic, vibration, and strength analyses that we completed in conjunction with OOO FPK Cosmos-Neft-Gas in support of products being delivered by OMK to fields in the Extreme North,” noted Trubodetal Managing Director Alexander Vashchenko.
OMK’s Chelyabinsk facility is one of the few Russian plants that is capable of manufacturing this type of product. The first plug trap designed for an operating pressure of 7.9 MPa was delivered to the customer in 2016. It has been operating nominally the entire five-year period.
