The United Metallurgical Company is launching an environmental volunteer movement. OMK facility employees in the Nizhniy Novgorod, Chelyabinsk, Belgorod, Vladimir, Saratov, and Sverdlovsk Regions, the Perm Territory, the Republics of Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, and Mordovia are able to join the initiative. As part of the movement, OMK environmental volunteers will propose and be able to implement their projects in conjunction with non-profits, local authority representatives, and other town and township residents.

Based on the conditions for participation, OMK volunteer projects must be in keeping with the Company’s systemic activities to mitigate the impact of industrial production and human activity on nature, to create a comfortable urban environment, and to provide environmental education. Expected employee initiatives include cleaning up natural sites, such as parks, bodies of water, and areas around their banks, planting greenery along streets, planting forests, efficient use of natural resources, reducing waste, garbage sorting. In 2022, the Company will spend over 14,000,000 rubles implementing these. .

To join in the movement, employees will submit online applications, and the best projects will be funded by the Company to secure implementation and advisory support. Projects will be implemented in Q1 and Q2 of 2022. At the end of 2022, a conference will be held to exchange best nature conservation practices. .

“OMK is fully integrated in the global ESG agenda via its environmental initiatives, investment in human capital, and continuous management improvement. One of our priorities is to promote the development of a comfortable urban environment, industrial ecology, workplace safety, and care for our co-workers’ health. We have been developing corporate volunteerism for over 7 years and have accumulated a wealth of experience. The launch of this volunteer environmental movement is yet another step by OMK to address social and environmental issues in the towns and townships that are home to our employees and their families. In partnership with the local authorities and residents, we will be able to make life in the provinces more comfortable by using best practices,” noted OMK President Natalya Eremina. .

OMK has developed an environmental strategy that includes both a review of the existing environmental metrics and a suite of measures that will enable the Company to comply as best it can with the requirements of international environmental standards in the next 10 years. OMK’s strategies and investment programs target the highest priorities among the UN’s sustainable development goals. These are matters of climate, regional development, investment into production facilities, care of the health and wellbeing of the employees and members of their families. .

The Company actively supports employee development not only in the professional plane but also in socially significant initiatives. Corporate volunteerism is one of the tools of such support. Today, the Company has over 7,000 volunteers. They have accomplished a number of successful environmental projects: cleaning of natural sites around Moscow and in preserves in the Chelyabinsk Region, landscaping around bodies of water in the Republic of Bashkortostan, rehabilitation of thousands of acres of forests in the Nizhniy Novgorod Region, cleaning of river banks in the Perm Territory as well as other projects. .

OMK is introducing technologies with minimal environmental impacts, improves the effectiveness of its operations to reduce energy use and waste generation in an organized manner, creating a corporate governance system and reducing specific atmospheric emissions. In particular, OMK facilities have reduced their effluent discharge by 60% over the past 3 years, and the plan is entirely to convert its plants to closed-circuit water supply. Some 95% of the manufacturing waste is processed or recycled. At the request of OMK Vyksa facility together with the Nizhniy Novgorod Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, Ecolant and the Vyksa Executive signed a memorandum regarding sustainable development objectives and responsible attitudes towards the environment. This is one of the first such agreements in Russia’s industrial sector. .
