OMK’s Belgorod Plant Delivers Product for NPP in India

The United Metallurgical Company's Belgorod facility (Belenergomash-BZEM) manufactured and shipped a lot of 62 bellows compensators for the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in India. Bellows compensators of diameters 400, 600, 700, 1,000, and 1,200 mm are components for the manufacture of sealed embedded feedthroughs for pipelines in Power Units 5 and 6 of the nuclear power plant.

Representative specimens have completed testing at the facility's in-house accredited laboratory. The outcomes of the tests confirmed that the design number of cycles over 40 years are guaranteed to be supported, 40 years being the deign life of the Belgorod product.

All the products were painted with an organosilica composite. This enamel has good radiation resistance, is resistant to the effect of decontaminating solutions, and is capable of withstanding superheated steam at up to 300 degrees Centigrade.

In addition, OMK’s Belgorod facility shipped 138 tons of forgings for the project to the Central Machine Building Design Bureau (part of Atomenergomash, Rosatom's machine building arm). These will be used to make components for a condenser pump assembly for Power Units 5 and 6 of the Kudankulam NPP. The billets for future nuclear power plant components are made from corrosion and heat-resistant steel 20x13.

Another 57 tons of forgings destined to become further components for the Indian nuclear power plant are being manufactured.

Other forged and stamped billets to be converted into valves at a later date are also in production. These will become feedstock for fast cutoff valves and gates for Power Units 3 and 4 of the Kudankulam NPP.

Deliveries for this order will be completed in the fall of 2021.

“OMK’s Belgorod facility is selected for these products because we have a lot of experience making NPP components. We have been making bellows since 2006, for instance. The plant has all the required permits to make components for the nuclear industry, it is trusted by the customer, and has an impeccable record as a supplier of quality product”, noted Deputy Managing Director for Production of OMK’s Belgorod facility Nikolay Maximenko.

BACKGROUND

Kudankulam is a major nuclear power plant in India. It is located in the south of the Indian state of Tamilnad. Currently, the power plant has two operating generation units with VVER-1000 reactors (1 and 2), and three further units (3, 4, and 5) are under construction. A contract to construct Unit 6 has been made with Russia. OMK's Belgorod facility was involved in the construction of all six generating units of the Kudankulam NPP.
