Over 100 young professionals from facilities belonging to the United Metallurgical Company (AO OMK, Moscow), students, graduates, and post-graduate students from specialized universities made presentations to the Serafim Afonin 13-th Annual Application and Research Conference for Young Professionals.
It is the first time that the event was held online. The participants made 99 presentations regarding their research in 9 subject-matter workshops.
This year the award and the prize for the best improvement with an economic benefit went to Artem Kravchenko, production process engineer with the Vyksa Steel Works (VSW, Nizhniy Novgorod Region, an OMK subsidiary) Engineering and Technology Center. He made a presentation on developing a process to produce heavy plate for delivery to the Arctic LNG-2 Project being undertaken by PAO NOVATEK. OMK has already delivered over 12,000 tons of this unique product to be used in areas of the Extreme North.
Specialists with the math modeling department of the VSW Engineering and Technology Center Lavrenty Kavitsian and Sergey Skachkov were recognized for the best innovative idea. They proposed an application for neural network algorithms for an automated mechanical certification of metal.
Konstantin Mortin from the Stoletov Vladimir State University was granted an award for the best student presentation. The presentation was about identifying rolled sheet metal defects on images using a deep convolutional neural network. Diplomas were also awarded to 13 young professionals from the Vyksa facility, two Trubodetal employees (Chelyabinsk), and two from the OMK parent company as well as an employee of the Almetyevsk Pipe Mill (Republic of Tatarstan).
“Designs by young OMK employees have been recognized by the research community on multiple occasions while the professionals themselves have become laureates of the Russian Government Prize and national competitions. Systemic research and application work improves employee professionalism and helps create new unique products and improve quality. This helps the OMK team be successful in realizing its creative potential and company clients to enjoy innovative solutions for its most complex problems”, noted OMK Governance Board Chair Natalya Eremina.
The OMK research and application conference for young professionals is named after Serafim Z. Afonin (1935-2014) Soviet Russian Federation and Russian metallurgist emeritus, thrice awarded the UUSR and Russian government prize.
The objective of the conference is to identify, activate, and develop creative of OMK employees and students from specialized universities that have initiative and talent.
