OMK Encyclopedia Recognized with National Prize

The United Metallurgical Company (AO OMK, Moscow) won the national Best Book and Publisher of the Year prize. OMK was recognized in the Encyclopedia category for its “Iron Logic of Russia”.
The Company implemented this large-scale publishing project in 2017 in collaboration with the Higher School of Economics Design Lab. The Iron Logic of Russia talks about the interrelationships between the history of Russian and that of its metal industry, and about how much metal workers have contributed to the country’s victories and accomplishments. The Encyclopedia includes over 1,000 illustrations and 500 entries.

“I thank the Prize Committee for the high grades given our efforts. Over the past 10 years, our Company has been involved in some 30 book projects. We sincerely believe that promoting technical accomplishments, engineering discoveries, successes of Russian industries is a most important tool to educate the new generation and to popularize engineering and worker occupations”, noted Project Manager and Advisor to Governance Board Chair Alexander Kastravets.

“This books helps look at the history of Russia at a new angle. We discovered the importance of the metal industry, from cannons in great battles, to the Bolshoi Theater Support Structure, to the gates of the Proviantskiye Warehouses, to the Trans-Siberian Railway and space exploration. All of these facts found a home in the pages of the Iron Logic of Russia. The metal industry is a solid foundation of our lives and an important one, a guarantee that our civilization is here to stay. This is also an expression of the essence of the United Metallurgical Company. OMK, without attempting to place itself in the limelight, supports educational projects, contemporary art, traditional culture. It educates and develops”, commented the book’s co-author, HSE Design Lab Editor-in-Chief Mikhail Nissenbaum.
