The facilities belonging to the United Metallurgical Company (AO OMK, Moscow) have completed Toyota annual production system audits. Based on the outcomes of these audits, OMK had made progress with respect to the first audit a year before.
The highest marks were given to Vyksa Steel Works (AO VSW, Nizhniy Novgorod Region, an OMK Subsidiary). As a result, VSW was awarded a bronze medal for developing a Toyota production system and became the first facility in the metallurgical sector to be recognized with such an award.
The Toyota Engineering Corporation audit report states that VSW production organization is at a high level. In particular, the facility’s effort to reduce inventories and improve logistics efficiency, to optimize the equipment maintenance and servicing system, the ergonomic workplaces and daily production monitoring tools were lauded. It was also noted that the level of production system development had evened out considerably throughout OMK's divisions.
"VSW achieving the high level of production system development using the Toyota method is an indication that these tools can be applied in an industry as complex as metallurgy. Which in turn sets a high standard for the entire industry. Recognition of VSW's accomplishments by experts from the Japanese manufacturer is further evidence of the facility's operational efficiency and high product quality. The team's professionalism and competent management have helped VSW create a flexible and effective manufacturing system which satisfies our customers' stringent requirements to the maximum extent possible. I thank all VSW employees and managers for this corporate success story", said OMK President Vladimir Markin commenting on the outcomes of the audit.
The Toyota Total Production System was developed between 1945 and 1975. This practice is known in Russia as "lean production". It is based on minimizing losses and continuous process improvement. OMK started implementing the production system in 2011 at the Vyksa Manufacturing Site. The first system audit took place at OMK facilities at the end of 2015.
