VSW Hosts Production Safety Workshop for Nord Stream 2

Vyksa Steel Works (AO VSW, Nizhniy Novgorod Region, a United Metallurgical Company (AO OMK, Moscow) Subsidiary) hosted the second pipe production and logistics safety workshop for the Nord Stream 2 Pipeline.

The event was attended by representatives of the Project's pipe manufacturers (OMK, Chelpipe, Europipe) and Project Operator Nord Stream 2 AG, including OMK Production Safety Director Mikhail Kozlov, Nord Stream 2 AG Material Manager Trond Gjedrem, Chelpipe Quality and Safety Planning Function Manager for Nord Stream 2 Irina Gordeyeva, Europipe Industrial Health and Safety Manager Andreas de Bruijn, and other managers and specialists.

Methods for assuring the highest possible level of production and delivery safety for the Nord Stream 2 product were discussed at the workshop. In addition, the delegates toured VSW’s advanced facilities: Wide Plate Mill 5000 and ERW Shop 4.

“The first project safety meeting was held at the Nord Stream 2 AG headquarters and demonstrated that this format is effective; therefore, it was decided that similar round tables would be held at each Nord Stream 2 pipe supplier’s. VSW’s was the first in a series of workshops. We showed our colleagues our production facilities aligned into a production system and exchanged best manufacturing safety practices”, noted OMK Production Safety Director Mikhail Kozlov.

Based on the outcome of an international tender, VSW will make and deliver over 730 km of pipe for both the Nord Stream 2 lines, each line totaling about 1,200 in length. This is the largest single pipe contract in history. In 2016, OMK shipped 155,000 tons of pipe for the project.

In 2008-2011, the facility delivered over 500 km of pipe for the two lines of the Nord Stream pipeline. At the time, OMK was the first and only Russian company certified for participation in the Nord Stream project.
